Making vacancy, doping with other atoms, expending of the layer space, heterojunction engineering, phase engineering etc. have been applied to facilitate the catalytic hydrogen evolution performance. We make a detailed summary on MoS2 characterization methods, synthesis, HER performance, mechanisms, to make a holistic understanding on the interplay between the structure, chemistry, and HER performance, which will give directions to elevate other electrochemical reaction by MoS2.
